La Ventana Magic: The Waka Glide Shines in Mexico's Wingfoiling Paradise
We recently wrapped up an incredible photoshoot in La Ventana, Mexico, showcasing our revolutionary Waka Glide in one of the world's premier wingfoiling destinations. The footage captured exactly what we'd hoped for - riders absolutely thriving on our mid-length folding foil boards against the stunning backdrop of the Sea of Cortez.
Mid-Length Magic in Perfect Conditions
La Ventana proved to be the ideal testing ground for demonstrating the Waka Glide's exceptional mid-length performance capabilities. The boards' longer, narrower profile truly came alive in these conditions, delivering on their promise of faster takeoffs and superior light-wind performance.
What particularly stood out during our sessions was how effortlessly the boards transitioned between disciplines. From cruising upwind to connecting swell lines on the downwinders, the Glide's thoughtfully engineered rocker design facilitated both instant takeoffs and graceful re-entries. Our riders consistently remarked on the board's versatility - whether they were in zen mode, carving graceful jibes and flowing with the swell, or charging harder to catch waves, the Waka Glide adapted beautifully to different riding styles.
Getting to La Ventana: Easier Than Ever
One of the biggest advantages we discovered on this trip was just how accessible La Ventana has become for traveling foilers - especially those with a Waka Glide. Located approximately 2 hours north of Cabo San Lucas airport, the journey is straightforward and scenic.
Cabo San Lucas itself is easily accessible from most major US cities, making this world-class foiling destination surprisingly convenient to reach for a long weekend or extended stay.
What would typically require an SUV rental for traditional board transport becomes a non-issue with the Waka Glide. Our team simply picked up standard-sized rental cars at the airport and easily fit all their wingfoiling gear - including folded boards, wings, foils, and personal luggage - in the trunk with room to spare. The savings are substantial - easily $40 per day by avoiding the SUV upgrade that most foilers consider mandatory. Over a typical 7-10 day trip, those savings add up significantly!
The La Ventana Experience
For those unfamiliar with this magical spot at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, La Ventana has rightfully earned its reputation as a world-class wingfoiling destination. The wind here is remarkably consistent, typically turning on around 11 AM like clockwork and gradually tapering off in the late afternoon - creating a perfect daily rhythm for water sports enthusiasts.
During our stay, we launched primarily from Hot Springs Beach and Rasta Beach at the northern end of La Ventana in El Sargento. Hot Springs serves as the starting point for one of the area's most celebrated downwind runs. The 5-6 mile route from Hot Springs to South Beach is nothing short of spectacular, especially when the El Norte swell is running. With steady winds at your back and rolling swell lines to connect, it's a ride that combines the perfect elements of speed, flow, and natural beauty.
La Ventana is home to some incredible riders, and we enjoyed watching local wing foilers and kiters showcase their skills throughout our stay. The community here represents a wonderful mix of talented locals and passionate travelers, creating an atmosphere of shared enthusiasm that's infectious.
Marine Life Encounters
One of the most magical aspects of riding in the Sea of Cortez is the incredibly rich marine life that calls these waters home. During our sessions, we experienced encounters that left even our most seasoned riders in awe. It's not uncommon to have a humpback whale roll majestically in front of you while on foil – a humbling reminder of the natural world we're privileged to share.
Several times throughout our shoot, we found ourselves foiling past sea turtles before they dove in understandable panic at our approach. Perhaps most spectacular were the mobula rays that seemed to perform for us, jumping clear out of the water, especially as we approached the end of the season.
These unexpected wildlife encounters add an element of wonder to each session that simply can't be replicated elsewhere. There's something profoundly special about gliding silently above the water's surface while sharing space with these magnificent creatures.
Culinary Highlights & Après-Session Spots
La Ventana's food scene deserves special mention, as it adds tremendously to the overall experience. After a day on the water, our team found several spots that became regular favorites:
Baja Bites at K0 - A perfect lunch spot featuring what some of our team declared the best scallop tacos they'd ever tasted. The fresh, local seafood truly shines here, making it an ideal midday refueling stop.
Mariscos El Cone - For authentic Mexican cuisine and incredibly fresh fish (often caught that very day), this spot became a team staple. The casual atmosphere and exceptional food make for perfect post-session refueling.
Palvora - Hidden in the caldone forest as you enter town, this artist-centric location offers a unique atmosphere along with fantastic baked eggs for brunch and excellent coffee. It's worth seeking out this local gem.
Cafe Xolo - When we were in the mood for a fine dining gastro experience, this special spot delivered memorable meals in a more upscale setting. Perfect for celebrating particularly epic sessions.
Planet Kite at Rasta Beach - This became our go-to spot for après-session relaxation. With cold beers, delicious burgers, and a perfect vantage point to watch late afternoon riders on the water, it offers the ideal blend of refreshment and inspiration. We spent many evenings here unwinding while watching the sun set over the Sea of Cortez and admiring the skills of La Ventana's talented wing foilers and kiters.
Beyond the Water
What makes La Ventana truly special extends well beyond its ideal wind conditions. The area offers a wonderful blend of adventure, relaxation, and authentic Mexican culture. The local community is incredibly welcoming, with a laid-back vibe that immediately puts visitors at ease.
The beauty of La Ventana's schedule is how perfectly it accommodates a multi-sport day. With wind typically arriving around midday, mornings are ideal for exploring other activities. Many in our team took advantage of the world-class mountain biking trails in the northern part of the region. Parking in the El Jalito area grants access to trails with 1,000-2,000 feet of vertical climbing, rewarding riders with breathtaking vistas of diverse desert vegetation and endless views of the Sea of Cortez stretching out to Cerralvo Island.
Giving Back
If you find yourself falling in love with La Ventana as we did, consider giving back to this special community through organizations like No Mas Basura. This local initiative works to reduce waste and protect the natural environment that makes La Ventana so magical. As visitors enjoying this pristine area, supporting conservation efforts helps ensure this destination remains special for generations to come.
Planning Your Visit
For those looking to experience La Ventana's magic firsthand, the prime wind season runs from November through March. During these months, you can expect the most consistent conditions and comfortable temperatures. This timing also coincides with increased marine activity in the Sea of Cortez, maximizing your chances for those unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Perfect Pairing: The Waka Glide & La Ventana
What struck us during the photoshoot was how perfectly the Waka Glide's design philosophy aligns with the La Ventana experience. Both are about removing barriers to enjoyment and expanding possibilities. The area's diverse conditions showcase exactly why we developed a mid-length board that excels across various wind strengths and riding styles.
The folding capability of the Waka Glide also proved particularly valuable for our international team. Rather than wrestling with traditional board transportation challenges, our riders simply folded their boards and packed them in the Rolling Waka travel system, making the journey to this remote paradise remarkably straightforward.
